Our Story

Over 25 years of community in West Auckland

From the beginning, our focus has been on championing wellbeing. What started as a vision has grown into a peer-led community where people come together to connect, learn and create, finding meaning, purpose and belonging along the way.

Origins

Te Ata began as a vision in early 1996, born from a peer-led community consultation across West Auckland. The inaugural planning meeting on 16 May 1996 brought together health professionals, NGOs, Māori, whanau and lived experience voices to establish a "Living Skills Centre" in West Auckland.
1997

Peer-Led from the Start

In June 1997, a working party of 8 consumers and 2 occupational therapists came together to build what would become the West Auckland Mental Health Support Centre. The initiative was community-driven and peer-led from day one.

Our Name

"Te Ata" with a meaning of ‘’the pathway’ was gifted by the Waitemata DHB Kaumatua Peremia Porter in September 1998. The name “Te Ata” carries layered connotations: the dawn of a new day, a new beginning; evoking a gentle, hopeful journey forward into the light.

Opening our Doors

Te Ata opened to members on 13th October 1998 at 14 Hickory Ave, Henderson. ON 10th November 1998, the centre was formally opened by Julie Leibrich, the Mental Health Commissioner. A significant endorsement of Te Ata's innovative peer-leadership within New Zealand's mental health sector.

Room to grow

As Te Ata's member base grew, we moved to new premises on Lincoln Road. A space with a fantastic outdoor area including a vegetable garden. However, as attendance continued to grow, the indoor space became too cramped for our community.

Our home today and over Two Decades of Community and Growth

In March 2011, Te Ata moved into its current home. A converted warehouse with large, light-filled open spaces, two kitchens, an upstairs art studio, room for pool and table tennis, a board game area, and a good-sized outdoor space. A place truly built for community.

Long-serving trustees, coordinators, and staff have maintained the peer-led spirit alongside members; some of whom have been a part of the Te Ata community for many years. Stronger than ever, more than 28 years on and Te Ata is still a thriving peer-led community and joint venture partnership. A testament to the enduring vision of its founders and the commitment of everyone who has been part of the journey along the way.
Current location

Te Ata provides a warm, welcoming environment that offers companionship, peer support, and a wide range of amazing programs and groups. We look forward to many more years of creating community together.
